What Is a Solar Street Light?
A solar street light is an off-grid outdoor luminaire that charges a battery from a photovoltaic panel during the day and runs an LED light from that battery at night. No trenching, no cable to the grid and no electricity bill. It is used on rural roads, residential streets, car parks, campuses, parks and anywhere a grid connection is expensive or unreliable.
Every system has the same five parts: a monocrystalline solar panel, a battery (LiFePO4 on all current ShineTong models), a charge controller that also runs the dimming schedule, an LED module with a road optic, and the pole and bracket. What separates a light that works from one that goes dark in winter is how those parts are sized against each other for a specific site.
That is where most cheap solar street lights fail: a large wattage printed on the box, a small battery inside, and no sizing at all.
