Short answer: according to Wood Mackenzie’s 2026 global BESS integrator ranking, published on 14 July 2026, the top ten energy storage system (ESS) solution vendors are Sungrow, Tesla, CATL, BYD, Envision and Trina Storage (tied fifth), Fluence, LG Energy Solution, Canadian Solar (e-STORAGE) and Wärtsilä. By installed volume in 2025, Benchmark Mineral Intelligence puts BYD first with 13% of global installations, ahead of Tesla (10%) and Sungrow (9%). Both lists are useful, but they measure different things, so read them together.
Last updated: October 2026. This article covers utility-scale and large commercial battery energy storage systems (BESS), the AC-integrated kind sold as a finished system with batteries, power conversion and controls. All rankings and market shares below are attributed to their publishers. We have not added our own scoring on top.
Why the two rankings disagree
Wood Mackenzie scored 22 integrators of AC-integrated BESS against 10 criteria, including technology, bankability, project track record and service capability. Benchmark counted gigawatt-hours installed. A vendor can ship huge volumes into its home market and still score lower on bankability abroad, or score well on technology with a smaller order book. Use Wood Mackenzie when choosing a partner for a project that must be financed. Use Benchmark to gauge who has scale and supply security.
Two numbers set the context. Global BESS installations passed 100 GW in 2025, according to Wood Mackenzie, and Benchmark estimated about 315 GWh of installations that year, up 51%. Chinese integrators held a 76% global market share in 2025, and eight of the top ten by share were Chinese (Wood Mackenzie, June 2026).
| Vendor | Wood Mackenzie 2026 integrator ranking | Benchmark 2025 share of installations | Home base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sungrow | 1 | 9% | China |
| Tesla | 2 | 10% (46.7 GWh) | USA |
| CATL | 3 | 6% | China |
| BYD | 4 | 13% (over 60 GWh) | China |
| Envision | 5 (tied) | 5% | China |
| Trina Storage | 5 (tied) | Not in Benchmark top 10 | China |
| Fluence | 7 | 4% | USA |
| LG Energy Solution | 8 | Not in Benchmark top 10 | South Korea |
| Canadian Solar (e-STORAGE) | 9 | Not in Benchmark top 10 | Canada / China |
| Wärtsilä | 10 | Not in Benchmark top 10 | Finland |
Benchmark’s top ten also includes CRRC Zhuzhou and HyperStrong (6% each), Huawei (5%) and Sunwoda (4%), none of which appears in Wood Mackenzie’s top ten. Several of these are covered in our China C&I storage suppliers guide.
The ten vendors
1. Sungrow
Sungrow topped Wood Mackenzie’s 2026 integrator ranking and, with Tesla, has held one of the top two places by market share for three years running. Its strength is that it makes the power conversion system (PCS) itself, a component many integrators buy in. Sungrow also sells a large commercial range, which matters for developers building a mixed utility and C&I pipeline.
2. Tesla
Tesla installed 46.7 GWh in 2025 by Benchmark’s count, second to BYD by volume. Its new Megapack 3 stores 5 MWh at 2.5 MW per unit. Production started on 6 August 2026 at Brookshire, Texas, in a plant designed for 50 GWh a year, with deliveries due in late 2026. Four units form a 20 MWh Megablock. Tesla quotes 92.5% round-trip efficiency and a 20-year warranty. US manufacturing is a growing selling point as foreign-entity-of-concern (FEOC) rules tighten.
3. CATL
The world’s largest battery cell maker is also a top-three integrator in Wood Mackenzie’s view. Buying from CATL means the cell supplier and the system integrator are the same company, which removes one interface where warranty disputes usually start. For US projects, check how CATL-content systems will be treated under current FEOC rules before signing.
4. BYD
BYD led 2025 installations with more than 60 GWh and 13% of the market, overtaking Tesla, according to Benchmark. Like CATL, BYD makes its own lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. Its MC Cube DC blocks are common in both utility and commercial projects. Wood Mackenzie ranked it fourth as an integrator, which suggests volume is not yet matched by the service and bankability scores that lenders look for outside China.
5. Envision
Envision, better known for wind turbines and energy software, tied for fifth in the 2026 ranking and took 5% of 2025 installations. Its pitch combines storage hardware with grid and plant software, which suits developers running hybrid wind, solar and storage portfolios.
6. Trina Storage
Trina Storage, the storage arm of module maker Trina Solar, tied with Envision for fifth. It did not appear in Benchmark’s volume top ten, which shows how the integrator ranking rewards project delivery and technology rather than raw gigawatt-hours. Module buyers already working with Trina may find the storage line easy to add to an existing framework agreement.
7. Fluence
Fluence, founded by Siemens and AES, ranked seventh and installed 4% of 2025 volume. It is one of the few large integrators headquartered outside China and positions itself on software, long-term services and a US supply chain, which can matter for FEOC compliance.
8. LG Energy Solution
LG Energy Solution ranked eighth. As a Korean cell maker with US battery production, it is an option for buyers who need non-Chinese cell content. Expect pricing above Chinese peers and a strong emphasis on safety documentation.
9. Canadian Solar (e-STORAGE)
Canadian Solar’s e-STORAGE business ranked ninth. It sells both utility systems and the KuBank commercial range. Developers who already buy Canadian Solar modules sometimes use it to keep one counterparty for PV and storage on hybrid projects.
10. Wärtsilä
Wärtsilä closes the top ten. The Finnish group brings power-plant engineering and long-term service contracts, and its energy management software is one of its main differentiators. It tends to compete on complex grid-services projects rather than on price per kilowatt-hour.
Tesla Megapack competitors: who bids against it
For a utility-scale tender where Megapack is on the shortlist, the usual alternatives are Sungrow, BYD, CATL and Fluence. Sungrow and Fluence compete head-on as full integrators with their own controls. BYD and CATL compete with vertically integrated cell supply. Wärtsilä competes where software and service contracts carry more weight than hardware price. For US projects, FEOC rules may decide the matter before price does: Wood Mackenzie notes that the non-FEOC content thresholds for storage under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act start at 55% in 2026 and rise to 75% by 2030.
What to ask any ESS solution vendor
- Who makes the cells, and is that fixed? Ask for written change-control terms. A system certified with one cell supplier is not automatically certified with another.
- Which fire test reports exist for this exact configuration? UL 9540A results and the UL 9540 listing should match the container or cabinet you are buying, not a predecessor model.
- Who services it in your country, and how fast? Ranking scores lean heavily on service capability for a reason.
- What does augmentation look like? Ask how capacity will be topped up in year 8 or 10 when today’s cell format may no longer be made.
Storage systems also need DC protection between battery racks, PCS and combiners: correctly rated DC breakers, contactors and fuses. ShineTong supplies storage accessories and DC circuit breakers for integrators. For component makers, see our rankings of DC contactor manufacturers and solid-state circuit breaker manufacturers. If your project is commercial rather than utility scale, the shortlist changes; see global C&I ESS brands.
Frequently asked questions
Who is the largest energy storage company in the world?
By 2025 installed volume, BYD, with more than 60 GWh and 13% of global installations according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. By Wood Mackenzie’s 2026 integrator ranking, which weighs ten criteria beyond volume, Sungrow is first.
What is the difference between a battery maker and an ESS integrator?
A battery maker produces cells or modules. An integrator delivers a complete system with batteries, power conversion, thermal management, fire safety and controls, and takes responsibility for system performance. CATL and BYD do both. Tesla and Fluence buy cells and integrate them.
What is Tesla Megapack 3’s capacity?
Each Megapack 3 stores 5 MWh with 2.5 MW of power. Four units form a 20 MWh Megablock. Production started in Brookshire, Texas on 6 August 2026.
Why do Chinese companies dominate energy storage?
They control most of the LFP cell supply chain and have large home-market volumes. Wood Mackenzie reported that Chinese integrators held 76% of the global market in 2025, with eight of the top ten by share.
Does FEOC affect which ESS vendor I can use in the US?
It can. US tax credit rules set minimum non-FEOC content thresholds for storage, starting at 55% in 2026 and rising to 75% by 2030, according to Wood Mackenzie. Confirm the content calculation with each vendor and your tax adviser.
