A solar connector costs very little, yet a badly made or badly mated one can stop a whole string. Hot spots, melted housings and arc faults at connector joints are a known failure pattern in PV, and IEC TR 63225 was written specifically about the risk of mating connectors from different manufacturers. So choosing a connector supplier is really about two things: whether the product is properly rated, and whether you can buy both halves of every connection from the same source.
Short answer: the five solar connector manufacturers we recommend to B2B buyers in 2026 are ShineTong (MC4-compatible connectors, branch connectors and wholesale kits from China), Stäubli (maker of the Original MC4 and MC4-Evo 2), Amphenol (H4 and UTX), TE Connectivity (SOLARLOK PV4-S) and Phoenix Contact (SUNCLIX). All five offer 1,500 V DC connectors. They differ in certification depth, contact technology, price and how easily a distributor can buy and stock them.
Last updated: October 2026. Disclosure: ShineTong publishes this guide, and we list our own range first because it is what we supply. The four global brands are ranked by our assessment of installed base, certification breadth and availability to distributors. Their ratings come from their own datasheets, linked under Sources. For ShineTong we state only what we can put in writing on a quotation.

The five manufacturers
1. ShineTong Solar Connectors
ShineTong supplies MC4-compatible solar connectors for distributors, wholesalers and EPC contractors, packed for export. The range is built around what a stocking distributor actually needs, not just a single male/female pair:
- ST-MC4-1500: IP68 (mated) male/female pairs rated 1,500 V DC, PPO/PPE housing, tin-plated copper contacts.
- ST-MC4-DUAL: the same family in 1,000 V and 1,500 V classes, for 2.5 to 10 mm² cable and −40 to +85 °C ambient.
- ST-MC4-50A: high-current pairs up to 50 A at 1,000 V DC for 2.5 to 6 mm² cable.
- ST-MC4-T and ST-MC4-Y: T-type and Y-branch connectors for 2-to-1 parallel string layouts.
- ST-MC4-KIT: carton-ready mixed kits, with OEM labels and bag prints available.
What we do and do not claim matters here. ShineTong connectors are MC4-compatible, not Stäubli Original MC4. TÜV and CE documentation are offered as options for specific orders, and we state on each quotation which certificate covers which part number. We do not quote a UL 6703 listing. Our practical advice, which matches the safety guidance in the next section, is to buy both halves of every field connection, plus branch connectors and spares, from the same ShineTong batch, and to follow the module maker’s instructions where you connect to factory module leads.
Who it suits: distributors who want one supplier for pairs, branches, kits and private-label packing, and EPCs who want the DC connectors packed with combiner boxes, isolators and PV cable in the same shipment. Prices are quoted per order, not published.

2. Stäubli
Stäubli Electrical Connectors (formerly Multi-Contact), based in Allschwil, Switzerland, owns the Original MC4 design that gave the whole category its name. The Original MC4 is rated 1,000 V DC; the MC4-Evo 2 is rated 1,500 V DC and carries higher currents, for example 39 A on 2.5 mm² and 69 A on 10 mm² cable, both using Stäubli’s MULTILAM contact. Stäubli publishes a TÜV Rheinland-certified mating matrix (October 2024) confirming which of its own MC4, MC4-Evo 2, MC4-Evo ready and MC4-Evo2000 parts may be mated. A mixed MC4 and MC4-Evo 2 connection is limited to the lower 1,000 V rating. Note that the two families use different crimping tools.
3. Amphenol
Amphenol Industrial Solar Technologies makes the H4 and its successor, the UTX. The UTX is triple-certified to 1,500 V: UL 6703, IEC 62852 Class A (TÜV) and IEC 61730 (JET, Japan). Under UL 6703 it is rated 15, 20, 30 and 50 A on 14, 12, 10 and 8 AWG cable, and under TÜV up to 75 A on 10 mm² at 85 °C. Its RADSOK contact has a typical resistance of 0.25 mΩ, and its locking system meets the NEC 690.33 requirement for a tool to unlock. Amphenol guarantees mating across its own PV range.
4. TE Connectivity
TE’s SOLARLOK PV4-S is a 1,500 V DC crimp connector certified to UL 6703 and IEC 62852, rated IP68 for 1 m over 24 hours. Under IEC 62852 at 85 °C it carries 29, 35 and 40 A on 2.5, 4 and 6 mm² cable; under UL 6703 at 55 °C, 35, 40 and 50 A on 14, 12 and 10 AWG. TE sells it in reels of up to 2,000 contacts for automated harness and junction-box production, which is why it is common with module and harness makers.
5. Phoenix Contact
Phoenix Contact’s SUNCLIX connectors use a spring-cage connection instead of crimping, so installers can terminate cable in the field without a crimping tool. The PV-C4F-S and PV-C4M-S 2.5–6 versions are rated 1,500 V DC under IEC 62852 and UL 6703, with UL recognition (E477377) up to 50 A on 10 AWG and TÜV Rheinland approval. A 6–16 mm² version carries up to 60 A. Contacts are silver-plated. Phoenix Contact also offers crimp versions up to 40 A (TÜV) and 50 A (UL).
Why you should not mix connector brands
Many connectors are sold as “MC4-compatible”, and they will physically plug into each other. That does not make them a certified connection. IEC 62852 and UL 6703 test a connector together with its own counterpart. Stäubli states that mating PV connectors from different manufacturers is not certified and is excluded by installation standards, and it rejects third-party claims of compatibility with the Original MC4. IEC TR 63225 documents the risks: differences in contact geometry, plating and seals can raise contact resistance over time, leading to heat, water ingress and arcing.
For buyers, the practical rules are:
- Use the same manufacturer and type on both sides of every connection you make in the field.
- Where you connect to module leads, use the connector type the module maker specifies, or follow its instructions for replacing the module connector.
- Use the crimping tool and cable diameter specified by the connector maker; a wrong crimp is the most common field failure.
- Keep spare pairs and branch connectors from the same batch so repairs do not introduce a new brand.
How to choose a solar connector supplier
- Market and code: UL 6703 listing for North America; IEC 62852 certification for most other markets.
- Voltage: 1,500 V DC for utility and large commercial strings; 1,000 V is still common on residential roofs.
- Current: check the rated current for your cable size and ambient temperature, not the headline figure.
- Range: pairs, branch connectors, inline fuses, panel receptacles and dust caps from one maker keep your stock simple.
- Tooling: confirm crimping or spring-cage tools are available to your installers.
- Documentation: ask for the certificate that names the exact part number, not a generic company certificate.

Frequently asked questions
Who invented the MC4 connector?
Multi-Contact, now Stäubli Electrical Connectors of Switzerland. “MC” stands for Multi-Contact and “4” for the 4 mm contact pin. Original MC4 is a Stäubli product; other makers sell MC4-compatible designs.
Can I connect MC4-compatible connectors to Stäubli Original MC4?
They may physically fit, but the connection is not certified. Stäubli and installation standards exclude mating connectors from different manufacturers. Use the same maker and type on both sides of each connection.
What certification should a solar connector have?
IEC 62852 for most markets, usually certified by TÜV Rheinland or TÜV SÜD, and UL 6703 for the US and Canada. The certificate should name the exact part numbers and the counterpart they were tested with.
What is the difference between 1000 V and 1500 V solar connectors?
1,500 V connectors have larger creepage and clearance distances and are tested at higher impulse voltages. They are needed for 1,500 V strings in utility and large commercial systems. A connection between a 1,000 V and a 1,500 V part is limited to 1,000 V.
Does ShineTong supply branch connectors and OEM packing?
Yes. ShineTong supplies T-type and Y-branch MC4-compatible connectors, mixed wholesale kits and private-label packing. Send your quantities and destination market through our inquiry form.
